Imphal, July 14 2009:
With the expiry of the time/period allowed for procurement of helmets in pursuance of the High Court's order on August 4, all motorcycle (of any class) drivers are informed and required to wear helmets from August 5 while riding in public places, according to a statement issued by the Director of Transport, Norbert Disinang.
The statement also reiterated that the wearing of helmets by motorcycle riders in public places is mandatory under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.It also added that the directive shall be strictly enforced by the Police authority.
Further the release stated that the Sikhs wearing a turban while driving or riding on the motorcycle in public places will be exempted.
