Seventeen members of AMKIL and NIPCO who were arrested by a Manipur police team yesterday from the office building of AMKIL and NIPCO were released without any condition today.
M Sorojini Leima, president of AMKIL (All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup) told media persons this evening that 17 members of AMKIL and NIPCO including three males had gone to Jiribam on October 6 last, to find out the actual facts on the suicide of N Sanjeeta Devi (15) there on October 3 last.
She asserted that after a thorough inquiry, the team reached the conclusion that some army personnel who further assaulted her physically raped Sanjeeta at gunpoint inside a rubber firm at Jiribam.
After reaching her home she allegedly consumed poison and ended her life.
The team also found that the people of Jiribam were frequently tortured and harassed by the army, she added.
The dead body of N Sanjeeta Devi was accepted by her family on October 7 under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the JAC of N Sanjeeta Devi and commerce and industry, Th Devendra who signed on behalf of the state government.
The main points of MoU were to order a judicial inquiry, submission of post mortem report on October 14 and payment of ex-gratia.
It also agreed on the replacement of army by the Indian Reserve Battalion.
Then, the team left Jiribam for Imphal on October 14.On their arrival in Imphal in the early morning of October 15 which was during the curfew, a team of Manipur police led by an SDPO came at the office building of AMKIL and NIPCO at Keishampat and picked up all the members of the team without assigning any reason and kept them at Imphal police station.
