Imphal, October 27 2008:
Blaming 'percentage cuts' to the tune of 40 percent by Government agencies and UG groups for the sub-standard contract works, particularly in educational institutions, the DESAM alleged that none of the two-storeyed buildings constructed in Johnstone Higher School, CC Higher Secondary School and Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School maintained proper quality.
Speaking to reporters after an inspection drive to these schools today, DESAM education secretary Arambam Thoithoi Luwang asserted that percentage cuts to the tune of 24 percent of the sanctioned amount by UG groups and another 14 percent by Government agencies starting from Grade IV employees to Ministers is responsible for the sub-standard contract works.
He appealed to all concerned to do away with the existing practice in the interest of students and teachers.
Even though the class-room buildings were constructed under ACA at the cost of Rs 1,08,66,825 each, the buildings were found leaking roofs, detached wall plasters, cracked floors etc.
About two months and a half back, DESAM detected such sub-standard works in these schools but there has been no change/improvement so far, Thoithoi decried.
The conditions of the CC Higher Secondary School Science Laboratory built at the cost of Rs 13,56,184 and Library Block built at the cost of Rs 12,61,131 are even worse than the class room buildings, he conveyed.
