Imphal, October 27 2008:
HALF OF Manipur is facing total blackout since the break-down of a 132 kv high tension power transmitter at the Yurembam power house and is likely to continue the same for the next few days till the weather condition improves, official source said Monday.
The transmitter which has been broken down is the main transmitting point for onward distribution of power supply in the state from the Loktak hydro-electricity project, the source maintained citing that the failure was due to the prolong use of the "outdated and old machines" of the transmitter.
Meanwhile, engineers at the state power department said that repairing works of the break-down machines could not be commenced owing to the prevailing bad weather condition with continuous down pour of rain since the around four days.
The transmitter having a high of 25 feet with three insulators exploded with a laud sound on October 24 last and since then it has been under defunct condition.
As there are many high tension cables connected to this 132 kv line transmitters, it would not be convenient to repair till the weather condition improves, the engineers observed.
"Considering the suffering of the people by the total blackout, we have even tried to repair the same by using tend but it could not be succeed," an engineer said.
But the department is making efforts to supply power to some places by using another 132 kv power transmitter which is coming from Ningthoukhong to Kakching via Churachandpur.
But power supply from the Kongba, Yaingangpokpi, Khuman Lampak, etc.
in Imphal east district could not be resumed to a satisfactory level.
Apart from this, load-shedding with alternate hours is being taken up in greater Imphal area, they said.
For relieving from this blackout, installation of power transmitter with updated technology and another standby transmitter is a much, the source observed.
On the other hand due to the blackout small industries have also been suffering a lot.
Not only the industries but also hundreds of households are also suffering.
Water supply in various places also affected by the blackout as water supply schemes could not get power supply regularly even though they could get only one or two hours a day.
