Manipur University students locked up the Administrative Block (A-Block) to protest roughing up of a student by three Home Guard personnel deployed at the block today.
According to press sources, the student, who is a hosteller was denied entry to the block at around 10.40 am with the security personnel insisting that he can go in only after 11 am and that too after giving his identity card.
As the hosteller fervently appealed to the personnel to let him in, the Home Guard personnel started manhandling him, revealed the source.
The scuffle resulted in the student informing the matter to the hostel from where the hostellers came out and locked the block at around 1.30 pm.
Soon after the incident, a joint meeting of MU students' Union and MT Tribal Student Union held a meeting at the Student Home where besides condemning the assault demands were raised for appropriate action and suspension of the three personnel.
Resolutions were also adopted for relaxation of entries for the University students, strict instructions to the Home Guard personnel against consuming alcohol during duty hours and referring the matter to the MU authority for prompt and necessary measure.
The infuriated students called on the Vice Chancellor in-charge Prof Ksh Bimola Devi and submitted a copy of the emergency meeting resolution to do the needful.
The dean of Social Science assured the Manipur University students to personally conduct a probe to ascertain facts behind the allegation against the home guard personnel and necessary action is case they are found guilty.
The joint memorandum would also be forwarded to higher authorities of Manipur University for relevant action, pledged the professor.
The memorandum also mentioned physical harassment and high handed attitude of home guards to students and replacement of the three with new ones possessing qualities of basic social etiquette, patience and humble manners while interacting with visitors and students alike.
