Imphal, September 13:
With talks between the Government and the representatives of All Manipur Muslim Students Organisation (AMMSO) failing to arrive at an amicable solution, the student body has decided to go ahead with its agitation against the Government.
Consequently, the AMMSO-sponsored 24-hour general strike will come into force with effect from midnight today.
Representatives of AMMSO met the Chief Minister and other concerned Ministers and officials of the Government yesterday to discuss their demand for a separate reservation policy of the Muslims living in Manipur.
But as the Chief Minister could not give any assurance to the demand, the talks fizzled out, informed AMMSO secretary general Md Anuwar Hussain in a statement today.
The AMMSO statement also chastised the Government for its alleged incorrigible habit of not conceding to the genuine demands of the people, until and unless the people take recourse to agitation.
AMMSO will follow suit and start launching a serious of agitation against the Government until the genuine demands of the Muslims people are fulfilled, Anuwar declared.
The failure of the Government to understand the demands and aspirations of the Muslims living in Manipur amounts to discriminating the weaker and backward sections of the society, Anuwar asserted.
He also appealed to all the people to extend their co-operation and support towards the cause of the Muslim people in Manipur.
Meanwhile, many social organisations have announced their unflinching support to the general strike being called by AMMSO.
