Handlooms Promotion Council organised the 11th Handloom Day observance at Manipur Press Club today.
Giving keynote address, Handlooms Promotion Council Secretary Salam Chingtam Luwang said that the society must give respect to weavers and keep a separate department for handloom in order to promote it.
Saying that handloom products preserve the culture of the State, Salam Chingtam Luwang added that seperate awards must also be instituted to encourage the weavers.
The State can enhance its economy by producing more and more handloom products, he added.
Speaking in the function as chief guest, OSD Handloom of Commerce and Industries Department, Moirangthem Rajen said that around 50 percent of the country's handloom products are produced in North East States.
As handloom is not being regarded as a major commercial activity, there is need to work together by every section of the society in order to promote it.
Children Home Proprietor A Tomba and Handlooms Promotion Council President H Rajendra Singh were the president and guest of honour of the function respectively.
