Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Andro today opened a five-day training programme on fish farming at Central Agricultural University, Iroisemba.
Twenty five trainees are taking part in the programme which will conclude on March 7.Department of Fisheries director K Saratchandra Singh and Central Agricultural University dean Prof N Iboton Singh graced the opening function as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Saratchandra delved into various technics of running fish farms.
Maintaining that fish farming is a profitable business, the director informed the gathering that 3000 kg of fish can be produced easily from a pond of 1 hectare within three months.
Nambol, Ishok, Thanga, Keirenphabi, and Kumbi are doing laudable job in fish farming, he added.
Giving his presidential speech, Iboton said that fish being a favourite delicacy in Manipur, the total fish production of the State is not able to meet the huge demand.
Loads of fabou (a kind of dry fish) and live fish are imported everyday from other states to substitute the demands, he added.
In his welcome address, CAU deputy director Dr Ph Ranjit Sharma said that three such training programmes had already been conducted earlier imparting training to 75 fish farmers, out of which some farmers successfully started running Self Help Groups (SHG).
