Three employees of the Education Department have been picked up for interrogation in connection with fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 13 crore from the department�s account.
The three were arrested today morning as part of the police investigation into the fraudulent withdrawal of the said amount which were meant for distribution to retired headmasters in-charge.
Informed sources revealed that entries recorded during withdrawal mentioned the withdrawn amount for payment to retired headmasters instead of headmaster in-charge.
Identifying the arrested persons as A Biren from Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai, Ashem Kirankumar of Yaiskul and Manithoi of Changangei, the source the three are employed as Dealing Assistants in the Education Department.
Despite the three having applied for anticipatory bail before the arrest was effected their bail plea might be considered by the Court concerned on May 17, stated the source.
Soon after the fraudulent withdrawal case surfaced some time back, the House Committee of the Manipur Assembly had been investigating the matter and found out that the cases involved not only 294 but 974 altogether, reminded the source.
The amount too was not Rs 10 crores as believed earlier.
The house Committee had also issued directives to hand over the case to a special investigation police team and has been exerting relentless pressure for stringent action against all person involved in the case notwithstanding their position or status.
The source also disclosed of some suspect employees clamouring for political patronage to escape penalty.
