Imphal, September 28:
"It's time to establish family courts in all the districts of Manipur", said secretary of Women Action for Development (WAD) Subita Mangshatabam.
She was speaking on one day consultancy meet on "Effective Implementation of Domestic Violence Act 2005" organised jointly by Freedom from Hunger and WAD at Wangbal community hall.
Subita observed that a woman facing domestic violence encounters several difficulties and it often takes too long if she wants to fight a case in court as there is only one family court.
Asserting that the lone family court and CJM courts cannot ensure full enforcement of the Domestic Violence Act, Subita observed that there is the need to establish family courts in all the districts.
Today's meet was graced by MLA E Dwijamani as chief guest and MLA O Landhoni as president.
Women Development Co-ordination chairperson AK Mirabai, CJM Thoubal M Brajachand, Additional SP Thoubal P Ranjit, Thoubal District Social Welfare Officer Kh Ahanjao also attended the meet as guests of honour.
In his speech, MLA E Dwijamani emphasised on the importance of instilling moral values to younger generations in order to restore peace in the family and society as large.
Landhoni expressed deep concern over the rising cases of violence against women.
Dependent status of women in financial matters and decision making process is a major factor for women becoming victims of domestic violence, AK Mirabai observed.
Secretary of Freedom from Hunger Lisham Pramo stressed on the importance of proper implementation of the Domestic Violence Act and to create awareness among the people about the Act.
During the meet, four women victims of domestic violence recounted their bitter experiences.
A panel discussion with DM College Reader Dr Ch Sheelaramani was also organised as a part of the meet.
