Imphal, August 27 2009:
A multi-sectoral development programme for socio-economic upliftment of six more backward districts of Manipur would be implemented soon.
The programme would be implemented in Churachandpur, Tamenglong, Chandel, Senapati, Ukhrul and Thoubal districts where minorities have predominant presence, informed an official source.
For the multi-sectoral development programme, the Centre has allocated Rs 139.10 crores during the last fiscal.
So far, Rs 3011.78 lakhs have been released for the six districts where the minorities are
concentrated.
This included Rs 746.29 lakhs for Churachandpur, Rs 329.18 lakhs for Tamenglong, Rs 759.38 lakhs for Chandel district, Rs 518.70 lakhs for Senapati district, Rs 343.23 lakhs for Ukhrul and Rs 315 lakhs for Thoubal district.
The projects listed under the multi-sectoral development programme for Thoubal district include opening of an ITI at Lilong, 10 water supply schemes at different places, eight High/Higher Secondary schools and one hostel.
For Chandel district, the listed projects are four High Schools, 10 community toilets at district Hqs, subdivisional Hqs and at Moreh town.
Similar development projects would also be implemented in other districts selected for the same programme.
Under the Prime Minister's 15 Point Programme, a minority cell would be opened in Education Department to facilitate growth of education among the minorities.
The Education Department has considered appointment of an official to look after the minority cell.
The cell would concentrate on expediting the pending modernisation process of madrassas.
The Chief Secretary has studied about implementation of the multi-sectoral development programme and the Prime Minister's 15 Point Programme in Manipur.
