Imphal, August 27 2009:
The manipuri Language Development Commitee (MLDC), Imphal has cautioned the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore on organising a workshop on the glossary of Manipuri literary terms proposed to be held from next September 7 to 16 at Manipur University, Canchipur.
In a letter, Leihaothabam Sharatchandra, President of MLDC, today drew the attention of Dr PP Giridhar, Head, National Translation Mission, CIIL Mysore that it has been learnt that under Dr Giridhar's guidance, the CIIL Mysore will be organising a workshop on glossary of Manipur literary terms at MU with N.D.Hodamba, who is working as the Core Consultant of National Translation Mission, CIIL, taking a major role.
Nine local resource persons, one from Cachar, Assam and three from CIIL have been selected for the workshop.
Sharatchandra stated that it is indeed a praise-worthy intiative on the part of the CIIL for development of Manipuri language which evolved on its own without the palpable influence of any Indo-Aryan language.
But the selected local resource persons are mostly from Manipuri literature, Sharatchandra said.
Drawing the attention of the CIIL, Sharatchandra urged the institute to add some more competent and experienced resource persons from literary organisations recognised by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi to fill up the required members in respect of archaic Manipuri, Sanskrit and Bengali languages, folklore, English language, Manipuri spelling, social and natural sciences, fine arts, etc.
The MLDC would gladly extend help, he said.
If the CIIL went ahead with the list of resource persons already drawn up, the costly and laborious attempts of the CIIL will fall short of the desired result, Sharatchandra said in his letter.
Therefore, if the CIIL's concern for Manipuri language is genuine and academic, the MLDC appeals to the CIIL to organise the workshop only after adding more competent and experienced resource persons, he said.
The Sahitya Akademi too had carried out a project in this line and the publication of the result is awaited, Sharatchandra reminded and added that the Manipuri language has its standard spelling, but some persons are making a mess of it by introducing their own system.
