Tampha phou for cultivation from ensuing kharif season

A variety of rice locally known as Tampha Phou (CAU R-1), developed by Central Agriculture University (CAU), Imphal would be launched for cultivation from this kharif season.
This was stated by Vice Chancellor of CAU, Imphal Dr SN Puri while speaking as the President during a one day Farmers' Field Day cum Interaction Programme today at Yairipok Yambem in Thoubal district.
Dr Puri said that the rice variety, CAU R-1 would be given to selected farmers of the State.
He said, fifty percent of the produces should be owned by the respective farmer while the rest would be acceded to CAU, Imphal.
The VC also assured necessary support including technical support to the farmers from the University.
Dr SN Puri further stressed on the need to expand coverage of mustard cultivation in the State.
He said, cultivation of mustard in 1000 hectares of land should be targeted in order to extract sufficient edible oil from mustard seeds.
The programme was organised by Directorate of Extension Education, CAU with the theme of augmenting rapeseed-mustard production of tribal farmers of North Eastern states for sustainable livelihood security.
The programme was graced by Dr Arvind Kumar, DDG (Education) ICAR, New Delhi; Dr JS Chauhan, Director DRMR, Bharatpur; and Dr SN Puri, VC, CAU as the chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Experts and officials of CAU, and farmers of Yambem have also surveyed the 50 hectares field at Yambem, a project undertaken by CAU under the sponsorship of ICAR and Directorate of Rapeseed Mustard Research, Bharatpur.
