The annual conference of the DGs and IGs of police of the seven NE States, Sikkim and West Bengal ended in Guwahati today with the suggestion of constitution of a standing committee on terrorism, militancy and insurgency at national level.
Assam DGP DN Dutta informed that all the members of the State police, Intelligence Bureau, Army and central para-military forces who attended the conference stressed on the need of constitution of the standing committee to look into the above mentioned issues.
�The idea of the standing committee is not a very new one.
Various State police of the region have been demanding it.
But this time we all have agreed to take up the issue with the Union Home Ministry more seriously,� Dutta said.
�The deliberations here yielded in valuable suggestions and these will be placed at the next conference of the IGs and DGs of the police forces of the country to be held in New Delhi on November end,� he said.
�We have deliberated on the insurgency in northeast and North Bengal, its ramifications export of Muslim fundamentalism and terrorism to NE, the role of foreign agencies and cross border terrorism with special reference to Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar,� the DGP said.
�Even the army top brass have also interacted with the police chiefs to evolve an effective strategy to deal with these problems,� he added.
Besides, the two day conference also discussed the problem of drug and human trafficking, smuggling of medicinal drugs and Indian made foreign liquors (IMFL), the menace of counterfeit currency, he informed.
Dutta said that the police chiefs of the States have also touched upon the issues of community policing, youth unrest and the need for community education by police, the setting up of women and children protection units at police stations and the issue of of rehabilitation of militants who return to the national mainstream.
