Police commandos shot dead a suspected underground activist at Palace Compound this afternoon and recovered a .32 pistol with five live rounds from the deceased.
However family members of the deceased have claimed that the victim was an innocent man.
According to a statement issued by Imphal East SP, L Kailun the police commandos deployed on frisking duty saw two Kinetic Honda-borne youths coming towards Palace Gate from Govindajee Temple side.
On seeing the police team, the pillion rider got down in front of MFDC office and suspiciously moved back to the direction of the Temple.
Ignoring the police signal to stop, the pillion rider fired towards the police party while at the same time fleeing towards Haokip Veng side.
While stating that the individual was killed in retaliatory firing, there is however no mention of the victim�s companion.
The deceased is identified as Laikhuram Boynao (25) of Kongpal Khaidem Leikai.
Refuting the claim of the police, family members said that Boynao was an innocent civilian and he had gone out to buy Cerelac for his child after taking the money from his father.
To protest the killing, a public meeting was held at Laikhuram Mandop this evening and resolutions to embark upon a series of agitation were adopted.
