Imphal, August 23: Members of Division-IV of the proscribed RPF/PLA has pulled up and punished a person who has been extorting money from the people in the name of the outfit.

Identified as Ngairangbam Manbi alias Surjit (27) of Khoijuman Mamang Leikai, the extortionist was paraded in front of mediapersons somewhere in Churachandpur district today.

Talking to mediapersons, a spokesperson of the department of communication and publicity of the outfit said Manbi had served a demand letter of Rs 4000 to one Mutum Jugindro, who is a former pradhan of Khoijuman-Kwaksiphai Gram Panchayat in July this year.

Out of the total amount demanded he had taken not only Rs 2500 in two instalments but had demanded another Rs 3000 on August 21 this year on the pretext of going to the hills.

But he spent the amount on buying cloths and drinking wine.

Besides this Manbi had also demanded and taken Rs 400 from former pradhan of Toubul Gram Panchayat Bira.

With that amount he bought 5 kgs of rice and spent the rest in drinking along with his friends.

Again, on August 21 this year, Manbi tried to extort Rs 1000 from Bira but was given only Rs 100 by the elder brother of Bira.

As punishment for misusing the name of the outfit and tarnishing its image, Manbi deserved to be shot on his leg.

However, as such sort of punishment is not to the interest of the people, he would be caned 10 times and handed over to his family members after giving proper advise against such activities through the custody of the Meira Paibis, the spokesperson said, while warning that Manbi should accept any sort of punishment given by the party if he is found extorting money from the people in future.

Manbi has also been directed to refund the amount he had taken to their owners within August 28.Manbi confessed to his crimes and pledged to reform himself.
