Imphal, August 23:
An eviction drive under the joint operation of Irrigation & Flood Control Department and Revenue Department began from the western side of Paona Bazar today.
Conveying about the eviction drive carried out with usage of bull dozers, IFC Minister N Biren asserted that the Government would persist with such exercise to pave the way for construction of a roadway along the eastern bank of Nambul river in the Paona bazar stretch.
Apart from asserting that the campaign is being initiated to check illegal settlement along the river bank, the Minister further noted that wastes dumped into the river bed is a serious environmental concern and potential threat to
human survival.
With the hazardous materials disposed into the river flowing to Loktak Lake there is urgent need for the citizens to ensure cleanliness of the river bed to not only save the important Lake but also to prevent outbreak of diseases caused by pollution.
The ongoing eviction drive would also cover Naga turel (river) banks in thangal Bazar section, the Minister added.
It may be recalled during the President Rule period, the then Governor VK marwah ordered and carried out eviction drives along the eastern side of Nambul River.
