Imphal, Sep 02:
Chaos and tension reigned in DM College of Arts today as some unidentified persons set on fire furniture items kept inside the Principal's office.
Two chairs and a table were burnt outside the principal's office, informed a source.
Even as fire tenders rushed to douse the fire, it was already put off before they arrived at the spot.
Even though reason behind the incident could not be ascertained as yet, it may be noted here that students of the college have been protesting recent transfer of a political science teacher to NG College.
Earlier, agitating students had smashed windows of the administrative office demanding revocation of the transfer order.
On the other hand, taking serious note of the disturbing scenario unfolding within the college campus, the Tribal Students' Union of DM College of Arts have appealed to the Students' Union of the college to bring about a solution to the ongoing class boycott stir which has seriously jeopardised the career of more than 1308 students of the College.
Taking strong exception to such modes of agitation like burning college furniture as was witnessed today, the Tribal Students' Union said that burning college furniture was a 'too extreme' method.
It maintained that they would lend their support only as long as the agitation was democratic.
Conveying serious apprehension of possible loss of one academic year for the students of DM College of Arts due to the prolonged ongoing agitation, AMSU has appealed to all concerned to restore academic atmosphere in the College in the larger interest of the State.
In a statement issued by AMSU, it took serious note of the destructive activities including today's incident of vandalising college properties undertaken by some students in the name of the agitation.
AMSU further warned all those involved that they should face the consequences of their own actions if any destructive actions like today's are repeated again.
It asserted that destruction of college properties in the interest of a few individuals was an act of immaturity and senselessness.
