Imphal, Sep 02:
A batch of 24 aided college teachers (including non-teaching staff) who have been on fast unto death stir at Kongba Laishram Leikai Heinoubon were pulled up by police today afternoon.
The stir was launched by 25 teachers belonging to five Govt-aided colleges on August 27 at Keishampat.
The first batch of the hunger strikers continued their stir at Porompat PDA complex after they were dispersed by police from Keishampat and then at Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi.
They were later arrested by police.
So far 48 aided teachers have been taken into police custody.
Taking strong exception to the alleged ill-treatment of the fasting teachers by the State Govt using its police force instead of initiating positive means to resolve the issue, a representative of All Manipur Government Aided College Teachers' Association (AMGACTA) disclosed that the stir would be continued at another place.
It is reported that the third batch of aided college teachers have taken up the fast unto death stir at Sagolband Moirang Leirak Machin today evening.
Meanwhile, some aided college students came to Raj Bhavan today morning to surrender their books to the Governor Dr SS Sidhu demanding their rights to education and unconditional release of the apprehended students.
However, only three of them were allowed to meet the Governor.
During the meeting, Dr Sidhu assured the students for a joint meeting of the students, the Chief Minister and the Education Minister within five days.
