Imphal, November 21:
The Kuki Movement for Human Rights (KMHR) has urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to immeidately intervene and put a stop to the killing of innocent Kukis and Karbis, restore peace and normalcy and rehabilitate the victims of guerrilla rivalry in the remote areas of Karbi Anglong District of Assam.
In an open letter faxed to the PM, KMHR general secretary Ngamsei Haokip maintained that the brutal killings and razing of houses and properties of both Kukis and Karbis in the remote areas of Karbi Anglong district of Assam in the past few days was the outcome of guerrilla rivalry between two extremists groups, Kuki Revolutionary Army and United People Democratic Solidarity (Anti-Talk).
Condemning the incidents as inhuman and uncivilized, the human rights body urged the Prime Minister to intervene to stop killing of innocent villagers and provide relief material to the displaced persons, whose houses and properties have been razed to the ground.
Haokip said that more than 25 Kukis including innocent high school students, who were on their way back home after appearing for their examination have been killed and over 322 houses of ten different villages have been burnt thereby rendering many of the villagers homeless.
At present thousands of Kukis are taking shelter in different relief camps being opened up in Haflong North Cachar Hills and three camps in Nagaland.
These refugees are in need of relief material like clothes, food, medical care, and most of all security, he pointed out.
