Adding yet another feather to its lustrous crown, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Imphal has set a record of having performed 12 brain and 6 spinal surgeries successfully within a period of one and a half months.
Neurosurgeon Dr Vyas Khongbantabam MS M Ch (Neurosurgery) performed the operations in the last one and half months with results at par with any premier Neurosurgery institute of the country and abroad.
The cases operated are head injury - which include ten head injury profile, chronic subdural haematoma; three extra dural haematoma; four brain contusion; two acute sub dural haematoma; one brain hemorrhage; two degenerative lumbar disc prolaspe; three cervical spondylosis; one spinal cord tumour; two (cervical-1, thoracic-1).With exception to one case which was a direct one, all the other cases were referred from RIMS, JN Hospital and Imphal Hospital.
Three cases out of these were already referred to centres outside the State of Manipur, chairman and managing director of the institute Dr Kh Palin informed.
He said that the institute has been increasingly felt the need of neurosurgery services in Manipur and its neighboring States to save lives, decrease residual trauma of delayed neurosurgery out the State and prevent resource drainage, and hence developed the needed infrastructure.
On the prevalent rate of spinal cord tumours, Dr Palin said that these are very rare and it is found in 3 to 10 per one lakh population.
