A Manipuri woman married to a medical practitioner from Meghalaya has filed a complaint against her husband and mother-in-law who also happens to be a member of the Meghalaya State Women's Commission alleging domestic violence.
The woman identified as Urmila Chanam fled from her husband's house at Tura along with her 3-year old daughter and is putting up at her parental home here at Imphal.
Before taking up the matter with the Meghalaya State Women's Commission, the victim had lodged a complaint with the Tura Police Station against her husband identified as John Rirak R Marak, medical officer of Civil Hospital at Tura and her mother-in-law identified as Sophie R Marak alleging of domestic violence, physical assault and mental and emotional torture.
In her complaint with the Commission, Urmila said she was married to John in 2000 and went to settle down in Tura.
Since then her mother-in-law has been inflicting mental and emotional agony by designing all the fights between her and her husband.
After her mother-in-law chased her out from the house, Urmila started living with her husband in a small cottage nearby.
But the mother-in-law created tension between the couple by accusing Urmila all the time.
'No matter where we lived or how many miles away from Sophie Marak, she continued to exercise major control over our marriage though her son', Urmila said.
Consequently, her husband started indulging in physical abuse on Urmila as early as 2001.'Initially, he used to slap me and I always compromised and forgave him but over the years his abuse became more grave', Urmila said, adding that 'on July 10 this year, when he beat me for hours and I fell conscious for sometime, he threatened to kill me with a Dao but I managed to escape along with my child and fled to Imphal'.
In her complaint with the police filed though speed post the same of which was received on August 22 Urmila contended that her husband demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakhs stating that in Manipur the dowry rate of a doctor husband is Rs 10 lakhs.
The ill-fated girl informed that Tura Police Station has registered an FIR case on the matter under Section 498 (A)/ 34 IPC read with Section 4 of Dowry Act.
