Imphal, September 12:
Taking the first major step towards fully implementing the Right to Information Act, former Education Commissioner RK Angousana was sworn in as the Chief Information Commissioner by Governor Dr SS Sidhu at the Raj Bhawan today.
Though the State Government had adopted the RTI Act some time back, it could not become operational as no one was appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner.
Speaking to newsmen after the swearing in, the former IAS officer said that no efforts would be spared to ensure that the RTI is implemented in spirit and letter.
Awareness programmes will be taken up all over the State to educate the people on the provisions of the RTI Act, he added.
The term of the Chief Information Commissioner is five years.
Angousana exuded confidence that the State Government will extend its co-operation to the Commission.
Significantly, RK Angousana took voluntary retirement as the Commissioner of Education Department in January this year and was in the reckoning for the post of the Chief Information Commissioner.
His candidature was accepted by the State Govt yesterday and accordingly was sworn in today.
