A student of Johnstone Higher Secondary School was reportedly killed when a bomb allegedly planted by militants in the jungle located between Kahoram and Itham Tangkhul village under Litan Police Station of Ukhrul district exploded at around 11.15 am yesterday.
The deceased student has been identified as Tayoching Hungyo alias Adayo (19) s/o Ungreingam Hungyo of Risophung village under Lamlai police station.
He was studying in class XI at Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal.
According to information received by the press, the incident occurred while Tayoching was returning home along with his local friends identified as H Sangchungam (17), H Martin (22) and JS Thangmeiso (27) through the jungle after taking part in a sports meet at Kasom Khullen.
As they were coming along, they found a big tree blocking the road.
Tayoching who was ahead of the others crossed over the log and as soon as his right leg touched the ground, the bomb exploded unexpectedly and he died at the spot.
The three friends who escaped unhurt carried the body till Itham Tangkhul village where they met some army personnel on patrol.
Some of the villagers claimed that they had seen some underground activists cooking meal in a shed inside the jungle and it is believed that the underground activists laid the bomb for the army personnel.
The body has been handed over to the family members after post-mortem at RIMS morgue here today.
