Imphal, March 14:
Joining in the public outcry against the atrocities being committed by security personnel on innocent citizens, many prominent social organizations have extended their support to the mass public rally being organized jointly by Chanura Lamchinglel (CLK), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Human Rights Alert (HRA) and Threatened Indigenous People's Society (TIPS) on March 17.In a statement, All Manipur United Clubs' Organization (AMUCO) called upon all the people, clubs and organizations to come forward and take part in the proposed rally and raise their voice against the atrocities being committed by security personnel in the name of counter insurgency in the State.
It is high time that all the people stand united in order to expose the repressive measures being adopted by the Government and its machineries, AMUCO said.
It is the duty of the security force to protect the lives of the people, not to take their lives; AMUCO pointed out, and questioned the rationale behind the imposition of draconian laws in the State.
Poirei Leimarol Meira paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), in another statement, said that the recent killing spree of civilians like Khundrakpam Tejkumar, Khumanlambam Deveshwar, Khwairakpam Ratan, Khumanthem Somorendra, Thangjam Binoy, Azad Khan, Keisham Nganba, Irungbam Samananda and Rahaman by Assam Rifles after they were picked up and tortured is a direct challenge to the Meira paibis of Manipur.
The movement of Meira Paibis in Manipur have come up without the instigation of anybody to save the innocent children from the brutality of security forces and they cannot not remain quiet when their own children are being snatched from their lap and are being killed by security personnel in fake encounters, the statement said, demanding action against the guilty security personnel.
It is also time that the Government listen to the voice of the Meira Paibis and put rein in the activities of the security personnel, PLMPAM said.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) while announcing its unflinching support and co-operation to the proposed protest rally accused the Government of doing nothing and encouraging the security personnel to unleash a reign of terror among the people of the State.
