Imphal, January 10:
People of the North East should cultivate the habit of solving problems by themselves instead of heavy dependence upon the Central Government or any other third party to solve the problems besetting the society, said AMUCO president Jagat Thoudam.
Talking to media persons today before his departure for Umrongso (Meghalaya) to attend the 14th annual conference of All Dimasa Students Union (ADSU), Jagat stated that AMUCO has been working and will continue to work for the unity of the people residing in the North East region.
A workshop with the primary aim of promoting unity in the region was also organized by AMUCO last year, informed Jagat and added that more similar meetings and discussions were also organized by AMUCO deliberating on the problems confronting the people of the North East.
Problems arising in any part of the north east should not be taken as an isolated matter but should be dealt with firmly by all the people of the North East by uniting together, he added.
Stressing on the importance of local mediapersons in fostering unity among the people of the region, he lamented that the national newspapers pay very little attention to the developments in the North East region.
He also appealed to all the mediapersons both electronic and print media to give more importance in the news of the north east region.
Jagat also stated that he would appeal during the ADSU annual conference for initiating a peace dialogue between the Hmars and the Dimasas to end the communal clashes in the New Cachar Hills of Assam.
Effort would be made during the conference for an amicable solution to the Kuki-Karbi conflict in Assam, he exuded.
Jagat also informed that some AMUCO members including himself would take part at the World Social Forum 2004 Meet on the theme "Another world is possible", slated to begin from Jan 16-21 at Mumbai as a part of the North East Networking team.
AMUCO advisor Dhanabir Laishram who also attended the press conference reiterated that problems of the north east region should be solved by the people themselves.
