Imphal, January 10:
The courts of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Imphal and Judicial Magistrate 1st Class (JMIC), Imphal East would hear the case in connection with seizure of around 90 jeeps taxis whose engine and chassis numbers are found altered in the registration certificate books.
CJM Imphal would hear the case for 80 jeeps on January 12 while JMIC Imphal East would hear for another 10 vehicles on the same day.
Almost all the taxi jeeps plying in Imphal East areas numbering around 90 were seized by Porompat and Heingang Police Station personnel in the last week of December, 2003 on the charge that the engine and chassis numbers of these vehicles were found altered in the RC books.
Basically such numbers were altered after the taxi owners replaced the original petrol run engines with diesel engines, said a lawyer, who appeared in favor of the proprietors of some of the seized vehicles, while talking to The Sangai Express.
Police seized the vehicles in exercise of u/s 102 of CrPC, he informed.
The CJM Imphal had on December 30, after perusing the police prayer, registered the matter as Cril Misc Case.
Police claimed that the jeeps were supposedly stolen ones.
The court also maintained that the vehicles were not properly registered under the Motor Vehicles Act and that they were not legally acquired under such act by those persons whose names are mentioned in the RC books.
Upon this, the same court issued a proclamation saying that any person, who may have a claim thereto to appear before the court and establish such claim within six months.
All the seized vehicles are being kept at the premises of Porompat Police Station.
