22-year old Moirangthem Thonglen Singh s/o late M Gouri Singh of Ukhongshang Laikol Maning Leikai was paraded in front of mediapersons somewhere in Imphal East district today.
Confessing to his crime, Thonglen told mediapersons that he became a party in serving the demand letter after being enticed by two other persons from his locality namely Maibam Chaoba alias Iboton who is a former corporal of an outfit and Thangjam Sunil.
On June 5, they summoned the officials of the Excise Department at Ukhongshang Lamkhai and they served a demand note of Rs 30,000 written on a plain paper.
Out of the total amount demanded, the Excise officials yesterday informed that a sum of Rs six thousand and five hundred would be paid in advance.
Consequently, he along with Chaoba were waiting for the money at Ukhongshang today when UNLF got wind of the matter and arrested him while Chaoba managed to escape.
Thonglen further disclosed that Chaoba and Sunil have always claimed themselves as members of UNLF and had on one instance taken a sum of Rs 5000 from one Nilkamal who was accused of trying to rape one of his sister-in-laws.
The demand letter served to Excise Department at Yairipok and signed as Unit Commander, Thoubal District West-Unit-IV, UNLF was drafted jointly by Chaoba and Sunil.
Talking to mediapersons, district secretary of UNLF, Imphal East informed that Chaoba and Sunil would be given capital punishment wherever they are found if they do not surrender.
UNLF would also penalised anyone who try to misuse the name of the outfit for their own personal gain.
Thonglen would be handed over to his family members after giving proper advice to dissuade him from indulging in such activities in future, the district secretary informed.
