Imphal, Jun 11:
Strongly condemning the confiscation of goods by the Assam Rifles at Lokchao on the Imphal-Moreh route and the restrictions imposed on the transportation of goods by Tata Sumos by a Major of the Assam Rifles, the JAC Imphal-Moreh Road Transporters has decided to indefinitely cease passenger services on the said route from midnight of June 12.
In a statement, the JAC said that the decision to launch their agitation was taken during an emergency meeting today.
Charging the Assam Rifles of harassing the transporters, the JAC said that Major Harjinder Singh of the Assam Rifles post at Lokchao had restricted the Tata Sumos from transporting goods from Moreh to Imphal and added that he had also confiscated a number of goods.
It would have been okay if the Assam Rifles were after arms or drugs but the manner in which it had started taking over the duty of the Customs and Forest is nothing but harassment, said the JAC.
The JAC also appealed to all the NGOs not to harass the drivers on the said route.
The meeting further decided to convey the decisions taken to the authority concerned and the Chief Minister.
The JAC also warned all to adhere to the call given and urged all not to ply their vehicles.
Anyone found violating the call should be held responsible for any untoward incident, it added.
