Imphal, November 26 2010:
The state Transport Department is eyeing to launch the services of low-floor buses to Imphal city areas.
For the plan, out of 50 low-floor buses ordered 20 have arrived at Guwahati for onward transportation to Imphal, official source.
An official of the department said that the department has started taken up work for introducing the low floor bus service in the state.
The same will be introduced in Imphal Municipal areas as first phase.
The department is to take up the work in collaboration with the state PWD department.
Out of 50 buses of the brand ordered by the government 20 are on the way at Guwahati and will be arriving in Imphal soon, the officer said.
The buses will be operated under the state transport department, he disclosed.
The survey for the routes where the bus is to operate has started recently and PWD department has been asked to take up necessary work for improving the routes to suit with the bus.
As a smooth road is needed for operation of the bus, PWD had been asked to prepare a special plan, he opined.
The main aim behind the introduction of low-floor services was to promote the public transportation in the city thereby reduce the traffic congestion due to influx of private vehicles into the city.
To achieve this goal, services of low-floor buses should be extended to suburban towns like Lilong along the Indo-Myanmar section of the highway.
