Imphal, November 26 2010:
Manipur political parties are gearing up for the next assembly elections though the event is still a year away.
A day after media reports of some Congress leaders in Manipur hobnobbing with BJP leaders, the Manipur People's Party (MPP) has started negotiation for bringing together a formidable alliance worthy of Congress' nemesis for the 2012 assembly elections in Manipur, visibly inspired by the resounding success of JD (U) and its alliance and "the change of paradigm" in Bihar scripted by Nitish Kumar in the recently concluded elections.
MPP president, Dr Nimaichand Luwang has sent a congratulatory letter enroute to Nitish Kumar, the chief minister who has given "Bihari pride" a new lease of life after the pride took a serious beating following 15 years of "misrule and misgovernance" in Bihar under the tutelage of Laloo Prashad Yadav, the jinx which was broken by Nitish himself in 2005 .
Dr Nimaichand Luwang said in a press briefing on the occasion of the election of the party's vice-president and working committee members today at its office premises behind Pologround in the heart of Imphal that, MPP has started approaching all the political parties in the State except the Congress for forging a potentially winning alliance that will go into 2012 Manipur assembly elections.
"Before the elections, attempts will be made to hammer out an alliance so as to defeat the Congress", because the people of Manipur has grown weary of Congress, therefore an alternative has to be provided before the people, said Dr Luwang.
"Positive responses have been forthcoming from some political parties but there are minor hiccups from some political parties as of now with regard to the proposition", he said, "but MPP will try its best to defeat the Congress in the 2012 elections" .
As regard the upcoming by-election of Konthoujam assembly seat left vacant by the untimely demise of Dr S Budhichandra, MPP said a common candidate will be flagged after proper consultation with other like-minded parties.
