Police disperse angry mob, three hurt

Imphal, December 11 2008:
AT LEAST three women hurt when police dispersed a mob that rose up and attempted to ransack a private hospital located opposite to Khuman Lampak Central Bus Terminus this evening following death of both mother and child in a delivery case at the hospital.
A 25-year old woman named Rawanla Rahing wife of Shangchung Rahing hailing Sangsak village, Ukhrul district died at the Mahirel Clinic and Research Centre at around 2 pm today along with the child during delivery at the hospital.
According to the family the woman was hospitalized today at around 9 am to the hospital run by one Dr Bidyachandra.
With the advice of the doctor the woman was operated.
During the operation doctor declared still born to the child first.
Later around half an hour, they again declared that the mother was died in the operation.
A quarrel between the family of the women and hospital authority erupted when the later demanded Rs.5,000 as fee for treating the woman which on hearing it, residence of the nearby converged.
Among the gathering people some started alleging that the doctor who attended the woman was not a doctor dealing with woman delivery case and he is doing the operation for want of money.
With the tension grew up high, gathering people started dismantling the hospital and while most part of the front hospital destroyed, a police team arrived and intervened to stop the people from further destruction.
Police ordered the gathering people to leave the place in which they refused resulting police resorting in firing tear gas and other mob ammunitions.
During the police dispersion act, three woman namely Samdan, Saining and Athen Tuniyen, all hailing from Tangkhul Avenue suffered minor injuries.
Later police carry away the dead bodies of both mother and child and deposited at RIMS morgue for further official procedure.
Meanwhile, family of the deceased woman has said that they will not receive the dead bodies till doctor involved in the case be given appropriate punishment.
