Imphal, January 16, 2010:
Students Union of DM College of Science, Imphal has railed against the governments proposed plan of preserving Tokpa-Pung under subsection (1) of Section 4 of Remains Act, 1976, notification for which was issued by the under secretary of Art and Culture, S Sarojini.
A statement issued by the social and culture secretary of the union, Narengbam Sanjit contended that the government decision to preserve the historical monument as protected area amounts to smearing the students community.
It stated that an agreement was reached between the joint students unions of DM College, the then CM Rishang Keishing, and the then Education Commissioner Md.Satar on May 16, 1996 to drive out all encroachers in DM College campus.
But the same is yet to be materialised.
The government notification for preserving the area as protected area despite the standing agreement is an open challenge to the students community.
It asserted that the students union strongly objected the decision to preserve the area as protected area and it would never allow it in future.
The statement cautioned the authority concerned not to invite a major issue out of the matter.
The union is well prepared to face any eventuality in case the words of the union are turned a deaf ear.
It further urged all encroachers to respect educational institutions and to make educational centres a free zone.
