The Red Shield Division, Leimakhong today while felicitating five time world boxing champion, MC Mary Kom has assured that they will extend a monetary assistance of Rs two lakh to Mary Kom's boxing academy as a mark of her achievement in sports.
Major General DS Hooda, General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division, graced the felicitation function held at the Leimakohng Army Camp as chief guest.
The GOC said that the Division will extend monetary assistance of ` 2 lakh to her boxing academy (MC Mary Kom Academy at Langol) under its Military Civic Action programme, recognizing her splendid performance by winning 5 World Boxing championship titles in a row.
The assistance is a support to her efforts in running the academy.
Last year the Division had provided Mary Kom's academy boxing equipment worth ` 4 lakhs.
The equipments were handed over to her on November 7, 2009 .
Appreciating her achievements, Hooda said that MC Mary Kom was rightly named as 'Magnificent Mary' by the World Boxing Fraternity at the recently held World Boxing Championship at Bridgetown in Barbados.
She has brought laurels to the country and the state of Manipur and has definitely become a role model for the younger generation.
After becoming a mother of twins many people thought it was the end of her career but she has proved the doubting Thomases wrong by her determination and relentless hard work.
"We wish that her dream of winning an Olympic Gold comes true in the next Olympics scheduled at London in 2012.The General also appreciated the contribution of her husband Onlar to whom Mary Kom attributes her entire success.
Mary Kom, speaking on the occasion, thanked the Army for the monetary assistance assured to her.
She considered the assistance will surely benefit students in her academy.
"I am satisfied that people have recognized my deeds for the country and state.
I consider I can serve the country and the State with my deeds as a sportsperson," she said adding that if she should come out as a winner in future championships, she will not take any further assistance from the government.
She further said that her next ambition is to win a gold medal in the forthcoming Olympic 2012 to be held in London.
She was thinking of retiring after achieving this goal, Mary Kom added.
