Students in Manipur University's Ladies Hostel allegedly ransacked the quarters of the warden and caretaker in the evening today as university authorities failed to fulfill their demands.
Police attempted to bar reporters from covering the incident for no apparent reason.
Some drunk male students in the Boys' Hostel also used uncivilized language to the reporters.
The vandalising of furniture in the room of the warden and caretaker like tables, chairs, beds and burning them outside took place around 6.30 pm this evening.
They are protesting against the non-transfer of the warden Dr Kanchan Sharma and caretaker L Ragini who they charge of imposing unreasonable fine to them.
A team of Singjamei police led by its OC rushed to the spot to control the irate students.
They also called out the fire brigade to douse the fire started by the students before the of Students' Welfare, Prof Dr Th Ratankumar.
The police were able to calm the students.
Girl students talking to reporters at the spot charged the warden and caretaker for imposing unreasonable fines on them.
They said they were imposed fines even for returning late to the hostel after classes in the day, and for left over in meals.
They recalled that on November 10 MU authority issued an order to inquire into the charges leveled by the students against the warden and caretaker.
Students were called up for giving statements.
Two students whose statements were given earlier were again called up on November 19.But no action has been take up so far, they lamented.
While students are unhappy with the delay in the inquiry, another notice to inquire into the same matter was issued today at 4.30 which fuel to the students' ire.
The notice issued today asked the students to give statement once against.
Incidentally the date (December 3) on which the students were called up for giving statement was the day of the first exam for the first semester.
Unhappy with the attitude of the MU authority, the student rose up and started ransacking the quarters of the warden and the caretaker.
