Imphal, May 26 2009:
A course to train sixteen 'Health Angels' was inaugurated by Mrs Madhu Gurung, President of Army Wives Welfare Assocation (AWWA) Red Shield at 357 Field Hospital yesterday, a PIB (Defence Wing) statement informed.
In her inaugural speech, Mrs Madhu Gurung emphasized the important role these girls will be expected to play in the up-liftment of their society and the responsibility associated with it.

As they have volunteered to be part of the noble profession, she advised the trainees to apply themselves in the right earnest for the benefit of their own society.
This course being a premier initiative by the Army of its kind in the region, it is expected that the trainees will deliver the faith reposed in them.
She also interacted with the trainees and joined them for tea.
The statement further informed that the "Health Angels"�an initiative by Red Shield Division of the Indian Army and brainchild of Mrs Madhu Gurung, President AWWA Red Shield is an earnest endeavour to imbibe basic health awareness and maternity training amongst literate village folk to empower them and enable their knowledge and skill to percolate down to the grass root level and benefit the population of rural villages from which they come and where no medical aid is available.
The responsibility of training these sixteen educated girls from the villages and hamlets of general area Leimakhong who have volunteered to undergo the course of twelve weeks has been undertaken by the Red Shield medical officers who will impart the required theoretical and practical training to these health angels.
After having successfully undergone the training, each of these trained girls will be armed with a health kit consisting of basic medicines and medical equipments for routine health and ante natal check ups.
Arrangements will also be made for replenishment of the health kit from time to time.
During the period of training the volunteer girls will be provided with the required stationeries for the course and afternoon meals.
