The state has continued to fail to enjoy the fruits of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, a Central flagship programme for universalisation of elementary education.
Subsequently, the numbers of students enrolled in private institutions are higher in the state.
According to Annual States of Education Report (Rural), 2008, the percentage of students at the age group of 11-14 going to private schools is 63.7% in the state.
Children at this age-group going to government schools are put at 33.2% .
District wise record of the state also shows that the number of children, at the age group of 11-14, going to private institutions is higher than that of children going to government schools.
According to the report, 71.4% of children, at the age group of 11-14, go to private schools in Bishnupur district.
In Chandel, 63.3% of children of the same age group go to private schools while in Churachandpur 80.3% of children go to private schools.
In Imphal East, 63.3% of children of the same age group go to private schools while in Imphal West 73.5% of children go to private schools.
47.8% of children of the same age group go to private school in Senapati district, in Tamenglong 65.5% go to private schools, in Thoubal 49.4 % of children go to private schools and in Ukhrul 52.9% of children go to private schools, according to the survey report.
The percentage of school drop-out children at the age-group of 11-14 is an abysmally low 2.6% .
99% of standard one children studying in private schools could read and write while the 90% of children of the same standard studying in government schools are able to read and write.
Standard three students of private schools who can read and write texts of standard one is 79% while the same in government schools is 59% .
Standard five students of private schools who can read and write texts of standard two is 79% while the same in government schools is 55%.The arithmetic skill of students of private schools of standard I, III, and V are 99%, 76% and 69% respectively.
