Imphal, March 23 2010:
Inaugurating the four-day 'North East Agri Fair 2010', the Governor Gurbachan Jagat strongly advocated development of the agriculture sector for allround advancement of the North Eastern region.
The Agri Fair inaugurated today at the Iroisemba premises of Central Agricultural University (CAU) is being participated sister colleges of CAU such as Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and sikkim besides Manipur.
Over 40 stalls showcasing agriculture and its allied products as well as technological skill are participating in the Fair.

In his address as the chief guest the Governor said, "Obviously, agriculture and allied sectors are the backbone of the economy of the people, not only of the north east but also the entire country" .
highlighting that the North East region had been gradually gaining recognition and reputation as a hub of medicinal and aromatic plants/herbs, Gurbachan Jagat stressed on scientific cultivation of these natural abundance so as to ensure the farmers reap the benefit.
"Similarly, raising one crop per annum needs to be changed to multiple crops with the introduction of atleast a crop of vegetable during the rabi season after paddy," he said adding that priority should also be given to fruit varieties which can be grown in the different climatic zones.
Conceding that even after 63 years of independence people of the region have been facing problem of shortage of food and nutrients, he opined that such inconveniences is due to increasing population pressure, poverty, land degradation and overall scarcity of land resources to sustain livelihood of the farmer communities.
Agricultural researchers should work closely with farmers to understand and shape technology choice, suggested the Governor.
While lauding Cau for organizing the fair, the Governor expressed hope that the organizers will help the farmers of this region gain access to facilities of tested crop and services from the university.
such a cooperation will increase their efficiency to exploit the potential existing in the region, he maintained.
The opening day of the Fair which is also being participated by the State Agriculture Department and various self help groups, witnessed large number of people thronging the stalls.
CAU's director of extension education and organizing secretary of the fair, professor M Premjit Singh conveyed that the main objective of the fair is to give a new impetus on the scientific technology in agriculture and its allied sectors to the farmers.
MPs Th Meinya and Thangso Baite and Cau vice chancellor SN Puri also spoke at the occasion.
