Imphal, November 21 2009:
In a frank and no holds barred expression of his personal views, Maj General Ak Choudhury said that the media in Manipur needs to be more vibrant.
Sharing his thoughts to the media, in probably his last interaction (the General is slated to be transferred soon), Gen Choudhury, airing his personal views, said that the media here has become stagnant.
He questioned why news from the North East do not make it across the Brahmaputra and suggested that the State media become more pro-active.
From Manipur, the reach of the State media needs to reach out to the North East and then to the rest of the country, he mooted.
Give out news which has to be given out, he suggested.
Young boys and girls in the media here are doing a great job and the media houses need to encourage this so that they get their due, he said.
Sharing more of his personal observations, the General said that despite this, the media in Manipur is doing a great job and added that it is only the journalists who have been speaking out on issues confronting the State.
The intellectuals in Manipur avoid sharing their feelings.
They have been remaining in the background, leaving the job to the journalists, he observed.
Gen Choudhury further said that interacting with the media has always been a learning process for him and the inputs from the journalists help him in carrying out corrective measures.
