Imphal, January 20 2010:
Peeved with the repeated failure of the Government to implement its earlier assurances to repair NH-39, the Senapati District Students' Association has decided to impose a five day chakka bandh on NH-39 with effect from mid night of January 30 and to immediately follow it up with an indefinite economic blockade.
Announcing this in a statement today, the student body said that the decision was taken after a consultative meeting held at the district headquarters and which was attended by district frontal organisations, SDSA's unit tribes, public leaders, district drivers' association, intellectuals and well wishers.
Following the consultative meeting, SDSA's executives and federal presidents drafted an action plan to immediately and effectively implement the said decisions of the meeting, said the student body.
Going on the offensive against the apathy of the Government, the statement said that after minutely going through the pathetic conditions of NH-39 and past records of MoUs and assurances given by the Central and State Governments, the members present strongly condemned the indifferent attitude of the State Government.
Going into the past record, the student body said that the State Government has failed to implement the MoU signed on November 28, 2008 .
Moreover the assurance of the Union Home Secretary GK PIllai on August 22, 2009 that funds would be sanctioned within two weeks time has not materialised till date.
In continuity of the agitation, SDSA imposed a total bandh on Nov 27, 2009 and added that during the visit by the Governor to Senapati district on Dec 3, 2009, a memorandum was submitted which was followed by another economic blockade from Dec 5 to 10, 2009 .
Again on Dec 23, 2009 a memorandum was submitted to the Home Secretary, but till date nothing positive has been done, added SDSA.
The SDSA is therefore left with no option but to impose the said five days chakka bandh and indefinite economic blockade on NH-39 .
