Imphal, January 20 2010:
In view of the repeated failure and apathy of the state government to address their longstanding demand develop NH-39, the Senapati District Students' Association today decided to impose 5 days 'Chakka Bandh' on NH-39 from midnight of 30th January and to launch an 'Indefinite Economic Blockade' immediately afterwards at the end of 5 days.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Consultative Meeting attended by district frontal organsations, SDSA's Unit Tribes, public leaders, District Drivers' Association, intellectuals and well wishers, said a press release issued by A Pfokrehrii Khrasi, President, SDSA.
In keeping with the resolve of the Consultative Meeting, SDSA's Executive and Federal Presidents also drafted an action plan to immediately and effectively implement the decision.
Stating, the "NH-39 is the life line of the state and its improvement is in the general interest of the people of Manipur", the SDSA asserted that it will never succumb to any pressure or fake promises but fight for the cause "till the genuine demands are granted at the earliest".
Voicing its strong disagreement and anger at the indifferent attitude of the state and the central government, the release recalled the many MoUs and agreements signed which were never fulfilled.
One of the MoUs signed between SDSA and the state government as far back as November 24, 2008 is yet to be implemented, the assurance given by the Home Secretary GK Pillai on August 22, 2009 to sanction funds within two months time is yet to materialize.
Likewise, no action has been taken on the Memorandum submitted to the Governor, Gurbachan Jagat on his maiden visit to Senapati on December 3, 2009, and also on yet another memorandum submitted to the Home Secretary on December 23, 2009, said the press release.
As a consequence of this indifference and apathy of the state government, the SDSA contended that it has been left with no other option but to take up this course of action and that the state government will be solely responsible for any consequences.
