The third National Statistics Day, marking the birth anniversary of Prof PC Mahalanobis, doyen of Indian statistics, was observed today in the state too by the state department of economic and statistic with a function held at Kangla hall, Imphal.
The observation of the day was started from 2006 after the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohon Singh ordered to observed the birth day to remember the professor statistics who tried to discovered a new formula which would help in the governance by founding Indian Statistic Institute.
Speaking on the occasion, retired director of economic and statistics, O Biren said that the state agricultural and horticulture departments will face a problem while implementing the crop insurance scheme which had launched recently as the insurance company will demand crop cutting experiment reports which is mandatory.
As per record in 2001, out of 81 departments under the Manipur government only 13 departments have statistic units.
At that time, Tripura has 43 units while Mizoram has 21, and Assam has 118 .
In Manipur, awareness on the important of statistic is very limited as when there are 63,448 statisticians, the state has only 528 such persons.
Retired additional director of the department, N Momon who also attended as guest of honour on the occasion expressed that in Manipur even there was process for abolishing the state statistic department.
Giving his speech as chief guesy, deputy chairman of the state planning board E Kunjeshwor observed the importance of maintaining statistics data in every department of the state government is very important.
In the process of collecting data for statistic, sincerity is also needed.
Retired dean of MU M Iboton, retired IAS officer Kunjabihari also attended as guest of honour in the function presided by the chairman of the Manipur Pollution Control Board, E Dwijamani.
On the occasion, chief guest also launched the website of the department "desmani.nic.
in" and also distributed the prize of the essay competition on the theme Role of Statistic in Socio-Economic Planning and Policy.
