SEPTEMBER 18 has been declared the World Bamboo Day during the VIIth World Bamboo Congress which was held at the Imperial Queens Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand from September 16 to September 18, a statement issued by Dr Th Bor jendro, speaker of World Bamboo Congress in formed.
President of the World Bamboo Congress, Kamesh Salam gave the welcome ad dress to the representatives of 35 countries during the function on September 16.The function was presided over by Suwit Kunikii, the Natural Resources and E vironment Minister of Thai land while the keynote ad dress was given by Dr Surin, general secretary of ASEAN.
Nagaland's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio spoke on the role of international bamboo' development.
The inaugural function was chaired by Suzanne Lucas, secretary of World Bamboo Organization.
Sessions of the Congress was divided into eleven sessions including Bam boos in Thailand, Bamboo and the Environment, Biology and Taxonomy, Resources - Forestry, Plantation and Conservations; Production, design, and industrial aspects, material properties, horticulture part I and II, Architecture and Engineer and also in partnership of the better world the INBAR, it stated.
The conference was in commemoration of the 113rd year of the establishment of Royal Forest Department, Thailand.
During the conference, September 18 has been declared as the World Bamboo Day and the day will be commemorated every year.
Bamboos of different varieties were planted by the representatives at the Royal Forestry Centre, in the Phusan Buri Province of northern Thailand.
The participants have pledged for the conservation of nature and its environment by planting more bamboos as the new generation plant which will replace the potential of wood/timber.
Six representatives of Manipur had presented papers on various topics including Bamboo a renewable natural resource and valuable material for cottage industry by Dr Th Brojendro; A study on the role of Arundinaria Callosa in the environment and its economic potential by Dr Th Sobita; New Technologies for mass production for handicrafts artisans of NEI by Sukumar Haobam; Cyanogenic glucosides in junevile edible shoots of some Indian bamboos by C Nirmala; and Allelophatic effect of Parthenium hysterophorus on germination and growth of bamboos by Gladys Muivah, the statement informed.
