Imphal, December 20 2008:
The Citizens Concern for Dams and Development (CCDD) has reiterated its demand for review of the Mapithel Dam.
Speaking to reporters today, CCDD joint secretary Jiten Yumnam asserted that prior consent of the people likely to be affected should be sought before taking up any development project as well as for the projects now in progress.
Speaking about the workshop organised by CCDD from December 18 on the topic "Development and Displacement", Jiten informed that several recommendations have been adopted in the workshop.
The workshop was also attended by a large number of people directly affected by Tipaimukh Project, Mapithel Dam, airport expansion, Loktak Project, Capitol Project etc.
The recommendations made in the workshop include review of Mapithel Dam and Loktak Project.
It also recommended that the Government should seek prior consent of people according to international norms before taking up any project.
The workshop further recommended against construction of Tipaimukh dam without consent of people as well as against expansion of Imphal airport which is allegedly not necessary, conveyed Jiten.
