Imphal, January 12 2009:
AT LEAST seven women injured when police fired tear gas and guns to disperse a mob of two neighbouring locality confronting over a matter related with electric transformer at Mayang Imphal Bengool under Mayang Imphal police station today at around 9 am.
The act of the police has been alleged as one sided one and in favour of rival group by the locals of the other side.
According to the president of the local club of Mayang Imphal Bengool Awang Leikai, the confrontation erupted when they went to charge a transformer install in their locality which is under repairing to the neigbouring locality.
But they blocked it.
Since then a tension has been prevailing between the two localities.
Today, at around 9.30 am, all of a sudden a team of Mayang Imphal police led by OC, Bikramjit came to the Mayang Imphal Bengool and started assaulting people irrespective of women and children by entering house to house.
They also broken doors of some houses and beaten up people with sticks and in that, seven women sustained injuries.
They were evacuated at a private healthcare centre, he said.
The injured women were Sajita Begum (22) wife of Md Salim, Meena Begum (29) wife of late Nasir, Sarejahan (18) son of Muhamuddin, Milan Begum (30), Rahena (30) wife of Helalluddin and Achoubi (30) and Rashida Begum (28) .
The president also said that the police assault the people as they could not find some people whom the locals of Mayang Imphal Bengoon Leikai registered a case against them.
