Imphal, January 12 2009:
Trouble broke out at Mayang Imphal Bengoon Awang Leikai today when a police team went there to pick up some persons in connection with the severe assault of a man following a tussle over a power transformer on January 10 .
Unable to face the irate crowd which soon threatened to turn into a mob, additional police force had to be rushed to bring in the situation under control.
The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Tussle over the power transformer first erupted on January 7 when some people of Bengoon Awang Leikai came to the power transformer at Bengoon Makha Leikai to charge which was opposed by the people of the latter locality.
Then a heated argument had ensued.
Following this, on January 10 five men from Awang Leikai, namely Md Amu (30), Siraj Khan (18), Md Dilip (30), Md Jallaluddin (27) and Md Salimuddin (33) severely assaulted Md Abdul Latif of Makha Leikai.
Latif's money and mobile was also snatched by the five attackers.
As per the complaint filed by Abdul Latif, a team of Mayang Imphal police picked up Md Abdul Dilip which prompted the local women to raise a strong protest.
Additional police force rushed to the area again, but the local people again raised an alarm and started a mob.
To bring the situation under control, police fired tear gas shells in which at least 5 women were injured.
