The World Sight Day was observed at Irabot Memorial Hall, Lamlai Chalou under the aegis of District Blindness Control Society, Imphal today.
Addressing the observance as chief guest, Health Minister Ph Parijat said that many people are suffering from mental problems due to the prevailing chaotic condition.
The number of people afflicted by mental problems has been increasing day by day.
If these problems of mental depression and mental diseases are not checked in time, the society would be only heading into more anarchy.
To control the fast spreading mental problems, the Health Department would be launching a mass campaign soon under a special programme, he said.
Observing that eye is one of the most important organ of the human body, Parijat said that the power of sight given by eyes enhanced the thinking power of brain.
Observing that lens could not remedy blindness, the Health Minister called upon all to treat and help all blind persons with kindness.
Additional Director (Health) Dr Y Yaima said that the Government is targeting to reduce rate of blindness among the population of the country to three percent under the Central Blindness Control Programme launched since 1976.The Health Minister also distributed spectacles to 258 people of Imphal East district having eye problems.
