At least 1,13,802 vehicles were registered in with the State Transport Dept at the end of the 2004-05 financial year.
This is excluding the vehicles used by Central para-military force as well as vehicles brought in from outside the State.
Correspondingly, with the rise in the number of vehicles, road mishaps too have increased with alarming regularity down the years.
According to records available with the State Transport Department, the number of vehicles increased by 7477 from 2003-04 to 2004-05.The vehicles are also registered according to certain classifications such as auto-rickshaw, car, jeep, bus, mini-bus, tractor, tempo, trailer, taxi, two wheelers etc.
Interestingly 65,420 two wheelers are registered with the DTO, Imphal West which accounts for more than half the number of two wheelers in the entire State.
With the increase in the number of vehicles, traffic volume has also increased considerably, especially in Imphal and this has had a direct effect on road mishaps, which have seen a steep rise in the last few years.
In 2004, 115 persons were killed in 87 different accidents while 836 were grievously injured.
During the first quarter of this year, (January to March), 31 persons were killed in 26 different mishaps, 301 persons suffered grievous injuries while another 108 sustained minor injuries.
The office of DTO, Imphal West heads the list with the highest number of vehicles being registered here with 91406 followed by Thoubal DTO with 7210 and Imphal East with 5957.
