Imphal, June 22:
With many doctors working in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) reportedly opting either voluntary retirement or seeking greener pastures instead of facing threat and pressures from various underground outfits operating in the State, All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) has expressed serious concern over the fate of the premier medical institute.
The student body appealed to all the doctors to reconsider their decision for the sake of the poor people of the State as well as to all underground organisations to desist putting undue pressure on doctors.
While admitting that many doctors in Manipur are working under various constraints and they are being targeted for ransom, AMSU general secretary Mayengbam Chourajit Singh in a statement expressed serious concern over the possibility of closure of the premier medical institute if all the doctors start applying for voluntary retirement from service or started looking for other opportunities outside the State.
Such a situation would be really unfortunate for the people of Manipur majority of whom are poor and could not afford to treatment outside the State.
Appreciating the service of the doctors, he said, despite various constraints doctors in Manipur are working day and night providing succor to thousands of sick people coming from different parts of the State everyday at RIMS.
If these dedicated doctors started leaving the State to work elsewhere, the day would not be far when the premier medical institute would be closed down, Chourajit observed.
