The Gauhati High Court has taken a suo motto cognizance on the Gauhati University for its inordinate delay in declaring the results of three year LLB (Preliminary) examinations for the year 2005.The Preliminary examination of the LLB, 2005 was held in January 2006 due to some internal problems of the university.
But it took more than ten months for the University to announce the results of the said examination.
The chief justice of the Gauhati High Court took the suo motto cognizance based on news paper reports about the delay and directed the counsel of the university to submit a detailed affidavit within a period of two weeks to explain the delay.
The court had also appointed an amicus curie to represent the case on behalf of the court.
The LLB preliminary examinations, 2005 were held on January 2006 due to some internal problem of the University.
The students of the three Law colleges under the university�s the BRM Govt.Law College, the JB Law College and University law College also held a sit in demonstration at the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University to protest against the delay on November 7.The Gauhati University authority however, announced the results of the said examinations a day after the students of the three law colleges took to protest to express their grievances.
The court observed that the candidates who appeared in the preliminary examinations have to sit in the Intermediate examinations within another two to three months from.
The delay had resulted in overall delay of the course.
General secretary of the BRM Govt.Law College Dipankar Das said that the delay had caused harm to the student community of the law colleges.
This would lead to overall delay in completion of the course and that the students would suffer, he said.
�The university has pushed the careers of the law students towards uncertainty and that this would make the three year LLB course by one more year,� Das said while adding that the students of the law had suffered earlier as the exams were also delayed by few months.
�The university authority could not hold the examination in 2005.Although the authority scheduled the examinations on January 2006, yet it was deferred till February 2006 due to some internal problem of the university,� Das said.
